Initiative This Experience focuses on initiative — taking action to create a desired result|with little supervision. With focus and dedication|anyone can build this skill. Those who consistently demonstrate initiative at work are highly valued by their employers|peers and customers. Six Essential Elements support initiative|all of which are associated with the “Personal Skills” component of the SkillsUSA Framework. Integrity: Having integrity means you do what you say you are going to do|even when no one is watching. You demonstrate honesty and ethical|authentic behavior|and you accept responsibility for your actions. Work Ethic: When you are known for having a strong work ethic|you will stand out in the workplace and earn respect and trust. Having a solid work ethic means demonstrating initiative through tenacity and dedication to excellence. You are committed to being punctual|meeting deadlines and following established policies and procedures. Professionalism: Exhibiting professionalism means demonstrating loyalty|self-confidence|maturity and a positive image — and behaving in alignment with the standards of your workplace. Responsibility: Being responsible means you are dependable; you follow through on your commitments. You are reliable and consistent|and you demonstrate personal and financial well-being. Adaptability/Flexibility: Being adaptable and flexible means you embrace change|foster creativity and new ideas and demonstrate resilience. Self-Motivation : When you are self-motivated|you are willing to learn. You exhibit passion for life and your career|and you can work with little or no supervision. You are in the habit of taking initiative and maintaining a positive attitude. It is recommended that prior to this unit about initiative|you complete the one about continuous improvement. When we engage in our career preparation efforts with an attitude of continuous improvement|we also seek opportunities to grow — and actively improve — ourselves and the processes|systems|services and products we work with. Committing to continuous improvement helps ensure we are dedicated to taking the initiative to grow ourselves and everything around us in the workplace. When we have no fear of the outcome of improvement|we increase the amount of energy - initiative - we put into our work to achieve it.
